Geese Management With Dogs

The most effective method for removing geese is hazing. This is the process of using dogs to harass geese until they are ready to fly away and never come back. The idea is to use a trained dog that is able to herd the birds and drive them away.

Dogs for Hazing

The Border Collie is the best breed for this job. This breed is known for natural herding abilities making them perfect for training to chase geese. It is important that the breed used does not harm the geese. No biting or attacking is allowed. This breed is also known for their wolf-like gaze and stance. When the geese think predators are in the area they will flee to another location that feels safe. They will avoid areas where foxes, coyotes and wolves are around because they are afraid of them. Dogs that have those characteristics will fool the geese into thinking they are predators. German shepherds and Australian Shepherds are sometimes used but the Border Collie is most commonly used for hazing.
